How To Promote Your Book With a Blog Tour

How To Promote Your Book With a Blog Tour has 9 ratings and 6 reviews. Elise said: Just when I think I'm learning what it means to promote and publicize

This is a question I have been coming across a lot lately.
Writers want to know: Is promoting my book with blog tours worth the money, how do i see ROI?

So I thought perhaps it bears addressing here with you guys as well.

Well I think my response to the question is first of all to correct the question itself.
Books have gone from print to digital mediums of publication, this we have all just about made peace with.
It goes without saying therefore that since all digital matters concerning your book take effect online(reading, selling, etc.) if your medium of publication is digital, you need to have a marketing or promotion strategy that compliments that move.

Therefore it is not a matter of whether or not you need a BLOG TOUR.
The real question is:
DO I NEED A PAID BLOG TOUR AND IS IT WORTH MY MONEY?
Funny Confession Ecard: Dishing out good money on Virtual Book Tours......BOLLOCKS! Blogger here, blogger there and wallah. As easy as writing a Dear John letter!!!

Let’s face it, unless you are prepared to organize your own tours, manage them and run them yourself, you stand to put a significant amount of your hard earned money paying for someone else to do this and you should be concerned about your return on investment. I woul be.
When it comes to dishing  out cash we all want to know, am I going to get what I paid for?

To answer these questions let’s first pretend that the initial one in the title was the correct one.

DO YOU REALLY NEED A BLOG TOUR TO PROMOTE YOUR BOOK?
The answer is an irrevocable YES.
General consensus is, a blog tour gives your book the fastest social media coverage in the shortest amount of time. It is in all probability the most effective and efficient form of online promotion as it ensures your book covers as many sites as possible within that time and has many bloggers and readers sharing it to their readers in turn, depending on the incentives your provide.
Many bloggers also cross post and therefore your review will not just end up on one blog page but quite possibly on Good Reads, Amazon, etc as well, for each blogger. That on its own is a lot of coverage.

When bloggers and readers keep talking about your book even after the event then you know you’ve done well because this means more reviews on your buying sites and better the chances of sales.
As you are probably aware, the sales function is based on the Law of Averages, a very simple system.
The idea is that if you present to enough people, somebody will eventually say yes.
So that for every action you perform towards sales, you will see very similar reaction, given a large enough sample. Meaning, no action, no reaction, no promotion, less chances of sales.
Blog Tours in essense are therefore a way quickly enlarging your presentation sample to better your chances of someone taking a bite.

Now to the real question:
NOW DO YOU REALLY NEED A TO PAY SOMEONE TO DO THIS?

The honest answer is most definitately NO, you don’t need to and next week Tuesday (18.02.2014) I will give your instructions on exactly what you need to do to organise you own tour. Diarise that date.

But  many authors prefer to pay for this service, so the question is why?

1. Promotion is time consuming and admin intensive, and for authors that usually means time away from writing. Letting someone else take over this function allows them to continue investing that time elsewhere.
The management of the tour includes:

  • Managing blogger rules and adherence to them (this is important because you do not want 1 & 2 ratings for your book during promotion)
  • Ensure review guidelines are always visible.
  • Manage master schedule (which blogs when and what to do when a blogger does not post so that the author does not lose out).
  • Managing giveaways and blog post design.
  • Distribution of eBooks (It is the author’s responsibility to make the necessary eBooks in various formats and download codes are available to the tour company.
  • Track reviews (making sure that bloggers who promised to post do. This can be extremely time consuming)
2.  The tour company has a better chance of ensuring that your book is presented to popular, high traffic blogs, who already work with them.
Not all blogs are equal; you want a blog that has a high traffic quotient. This can be be quite time consuming and tricky to figure out for the author.

3.  These promotions tend help to get momentum going in terms of marketing your book but also introduce you to a network specifically interested in the well being of your genre. For example loosely you can see by what goes on, on my blog that i love Paranormal, Romance, Literary Fiction and YA so I tend to support those authors. For you this means after your tour you are able to approach the very same bloggers to work with on future projects knowing that they run quality blogs.

In short I think these are the main reasons why writers prefer to pay for blog tours.
I hope this post will help you decide, whether a tour is something to venture into because paid or not, your book can greatly benefit from an organized tour.
